Charis International School (CIS), established on 24 August 2014, is the first registered international school in Tawau region, as well as the third registered international school in the state of Sabah. We provide education that adheres to internationally recognised standards, covering all stages from the kindergarten to secondary school. Our curriculum follows the Cambridge International Curriculum that is approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and we also serve as a Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination centre. Cambridge IGCSE qualification is widely accepted as entry requirements by many colleges and universities worldwide.

As a coastal city, Tawau is famous for its fresh and delicious seafood. There are many restaurants offering an international arrays of cuisines in town. All the famous fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut and many others are available in town.

Dining costs range from MYR10-30 for a budget meal, MYR30-50 for a mid-range meal, and seafood dishes may cost more, between MYR50-100, if a large quantity is purchased.

Traditional Cultural Festivals

Tawau preserves rich traditional cultures and celebrates various festivals annually, such as Hari Raya Puasa, Chinese New Year, Wesak Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Harvest Festival. Malaysia's diverse ethnicities ensure a year-round array of celebrations, exemplifying a harmonious multicultural society.

On the first day of Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims go to mosques to pray and seek forgiveness from family and friends. Many Muslims host "open houses," welcoming neighbours and friends to join the celebration and enjoy festive food.

In East Malaysia, during the months of May and June, which is the harvest season for rice, indigenous people celebrate the Harvest Festival. It is a time to thank the heavens for the past year's blessings and anticipate a more abundant year ahead.

Sabah, known as the "Land Below The Wind", is shielded from typhoons that frequently hit the Philippines, located to the north of Sabah. It is also relatively free from other forms of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanos.

The population in Sabah is diverse, including Chinese, Malays and indigenous communities like the Dusun. The term "Sabahan" is used to refer to people from Sabah, representing all ethnicities without distinction of race and religion, symbolising a harmonious coexistence.

Flights

The direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau takes less than three hours making travel convenient for international travellers. The flight time from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau is less than an hour. International travellers can easily get to Tawau via these two major entry points in Malaysia.

Tawau Airport is centrally located, with Semporna to the north and Tawau to the south.

Charis International School is only about 35 minutes’ drive (30 km) from Tawau Airport.

Transportation and Convenience

In terms of public transportation, Tawau has electronic ride-hailing services provided by three different companies: GRAB, AIRASIA, and MAXIM. As an app-based service, prices are transparent, users can rate drivers, and GPS tracking provides a relatively safe experience. The small size of Tawau area ensures that prices remain reasonable.
